Selection and Training
Reader Training
Each diocese has its own programme of training which is moderated by the Ministry Division of the Archbishops' Council. Those who successfully complete the training programme are awarded the Church of England Readers' Certificate.
Training usually lasts about three years, and is designed to offer study and experience in important areas such as Biblical study, Christian belief, pastoral studies, prayer, and worship. The course is intended to develop both theological understanding and practical ministerial skills.
After admission and licensing, Readers are expected to continue their ministerial education through diocesan and other programmes.

Criteria for selection
- Are you a confirmed and regular communicant member of the Church of England?
- Are you keen to communicate your Christian faith?
- Are you supported by your Church laity and PCC?
- Are you willing to train as a lay Minister?
If the answer to these questions is 'Yes' then Reader Ministry may be for you.
Discuss - your ideas and feelings with your family, friends, and other members of your church fellowship, and if possible with a Reader.
Selection Procedure
[It is recommended that this process begins before the end of January]
- Interviews with sub-wardens
- Submit documents for Reader candidate application
- Attend Selection Conference (held on a Saturday in late April - mid May]
- Receive decision of the selection conference from the bishop [usually within 3 weeks]
